network question

I sporadically flood-ping various boxen/devices on my LAN from this box, 
an AMD Jaguar-kabini-based desktop running FreeBSD 9.3R-p20, to make 
sure they are awake/up-to-snuff. I did so a few min. ago:

My (timker-toy) TPlink gateway obviously doesn't look good, but it is 
otherwise working OK. However, my rather elderly FC14-x86_64 Q6600-based 
server on a Tyan Tomcat Q35 mbd seems to outrun my much newer NetBSD 
6.1.5 based AMD 4256EE based server on a Supermicro H8SCM mbd. Both are 
attached to the same 8-port Netgear gigabit switch, both report 
1000Base-T networking connection from ifconfig, i.e everything looks AOK 
for both. Yet the Q6600 looks like it is processing that network I/O 
somewhere between 4-10X faster. This isn't a full stress test, but it 
shouldn't be that bad. Any clues why this is happening ? TIA & have a 
good one.
