Re: upgrading 5.x to 6.1.5 or 7?

But ... why?

Because 6.x isn't going to be supported forever and since my experience with the 7.x BETA was good I didn't see any reason to delay the upgrade on any machine where it worked. I still have one internet connected 6.x system (my firewall) but that to will go through the same process once I've validated that the 7.x packet filtering code works.

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Well it was slightly broke. All those out of date packages had a mish-mash of security vulnerabilities and since some of the machine is exposed to the internet it seemed like a good idea to resolve that.

And if it is broke, there's something wrong with it.

Which is why I went through the process.

Apart from the reinstall all packages step that sequence is what I do for all NetBSD os upgrades. If you have a machine that can do release builds quickly (which I do) its by far the easiest approach I've found.
