ucarp(8) vs carp(4)

Greetings,

As far as I understand - there are two different implementations of
CARP protocol - userland ucarp daemon (8) and kernel carp(4)
interface and I have several questions about it:

1. Is it true and I need no changes in kernel to run ucarp(8)?
2. Is there any helpful thoughts or experience about what
technology is better for production use?
