Updating a "branch" (I assume you mean directory) is not supported in
pkgsrc. Updating a single package is not supported as well.

I thought I had mentioned this in the pkgsrc guide (in
https://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/pkgsrc.html#uptodate), but apparently
I didn't.

Updating only part of the pkgsrc tree is unsupported because there may
be changes in different directories that depend on each other, for
example in mk/ and in lang/python/application.mk and in the package
itself. Mixing these partly applied changes would not make sense.
