[q] gradle on NetBSD 9.1 (amd64) with OpenJDK 11 -- does not work

Wanted to check if anybody has gradle working with OpenJDK 11 on OpenBSD 
9.1
I cannot get it to work at all.

not even:

gradle status
  or
gradle init

I have tried going back to Gradle versions that are over 1 year old, and 
still same issue

I am thinking that something might be wrong with my sysctl.conf or 
login.conf or something else.
If there are suggestions on what to look for next, would very much 
appreciate.
