If the external drive disconnected unexpectedly, as mine sometimes does
due to a loose power socket, then it would show up in the system logs:
/var/log/messages, and also in a dmesg output.

If you're having trouble with your usual X video driver, try the safe
`wsfb' framebuffer driver:
