There were some Mini-PCI adapters (for notebooks) and there was
one USB adapter ("Original RPI Wifi dongle"). Very difficult
to find nowadays.

The overhead is in the SDIO driver. It's not better in a 802.11g network
(802.11a is rare in Europe).

Same as in other RPIs, the chips vary slightly (some are 2.4GHz only)
but all use a SDIO interface. The chips themselves can do PCIe, USB
and SDIO, it's probably a matter of packaging what interface is used.
