There are a number of open bugs with "checkbox" issues.  The following
most closely describes what I'm experiencing.

Problematic versions seem to be evince 3.34.x (3.34.2 in pkgsrc-2022Q1)
and most recent entry in bug report seems to indicate 3.38 may work
correctly.
