Re: Used HDs

YMMV :)

My home server has a couple of these, mirrored:

Model Family: Western Digital Green
Device Model: WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0

This one is still mostly ok after 10+ years active:

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail Always - 0
  3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 172 168 021 Pre-fail Always - 6375
  4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 55
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always - 0
  7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x002e 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0
  9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 95063
...
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 5

This one is starting to run a little slow:

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail Always - 10
  3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 169 162 021 Pre-fail Always - 6550
  4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 63
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always - 0
  7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x002e 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0
  9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 95067
...
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 10

That machine only gets powered down for the occasional cleaning to get
the dust out of the heat sinks, power outages, and occasionally replacing
bits, like just now replacing the dying power supply.

I'm currently considering replacing both - they're not exactly
performant drives.

My experience is that drives tend to either fail in the first year,
or survive for a number of years. And they also don't particularly
mind running hot; 45C is still ok.

Temperature, infant mortality and the lack of load as a relevant
factor seems born out in the industry:
