I think you're going to have to show your work and explain your
reasoning for everything, including what you mean by "fails".  (Startx
doesn't "fail" if it starts an Xserver and runs your ~/.xinitrc -- those
actions are the very definition of "functions correctly".)  (Also, one
doesn't kill the X11 server by pressing <ctrl-d> -- though that might
eventually have the same effect if it were done in the xterm window
which was the last xterm started by your ~/.xinitrc.)

I.e. all relevant scripts (especially the content of your ~/.xinitrc),
plus a transcript (e.g. from script(1)) of the terminal session where
you run startx from the point where you run it to the point where a
shell prompt appears again, ideally followed immediately by an "echo $?"
command as well.

Also, what exactly happens if you remove/rename your ~/.xinitrc and then
run "startx"?
