osabi is a sort of a sentinel package. The things that depend closely on the kernel version, and that should be rebuilt when you upgrade the OS, depend on osabi.

The thing about forcing the check is that you cannot be sure the software that depends on it will actually work.

However, you are right that this plays poorly with binary packages. I am not sure what a good solution for this is. The binary packages are always built for the .0 release.

Should pkgin or pkg_install have special support for osabi in binary packages?
