Due to a crashed hard drive, I reinstalled the operating system on Zaphod.  
While reinstalling teTeX, this happened:

The pkgsrc tree is NFS mounted from a system that has previously allowed teTeX* 
to compile without a problem.  Interestingly enough, I tried building teTeX* 
there and got the same problem.
