 I tested with bash as provided by the Debian package 2.05a-11 on a Debian
 3.0 system.
 
 I may have misunderstood the problem or how to check.
 
 reed@sloth:~$ echo $PS[pressed TAB here twice]
 $PS1  $PS2  $PS4
 
 And two spaces in-between each above.
 
 My PS1 ends with a space and my PS2 ends with a space.
