Problems compiling on Irix

I have a SGI Octane running 6.5.22. I have GCC installed from SGI. I can 
bootstrap pkgsrc ok, but everytime I try and compile a package I get an 
error in the configuration section. It seems that configure is trying to 
see if gcc works and passes it an illegal option and the script then 
assumes that it cannot create a binary. In the Perl package, it tries gcc 
-64 -woff and "-64" and "-woff" are not recognized by GCC.

Does any one know how to fix this?
