and needs to be fixed relatively urgently, as bash is currently completely
unusable for people who use escape codes (and has been for nearly a year!)

Apologies for not getting this logged in the PR sooner, I turned off
multibyte when it was first broken and have only now come to reinstall my
system and discover the bug again.
