 DO NOT COMMIT these patches, please.  the situation is not that simple.
 
 with this new freetype software depending on its headers may fail (and
 will, e.g., fontconfig).  also lots of changes in PLIST are missing.
 
 i was looking at this whole issue today and the best thing we could do
 now is backport the fixes to 2.1.10, but i ran out of time..
