 Was this a recent change?  I sync'd to CVS at about 1pm (GMT), so I
 should be current as of then.  I'll update now...
 
 ... and I've spotted another bug - bootstrap has :
 
 test -z "$CC" || CC=gcc # default to gcc if no compiler is specified
 
 ... which should surely either be "test -n "$CC" ||" or "test -z "$CC" &&"
