 It works the same way in NetBSD4 for me.
 XAPPLRESDIR 
 is definitely set to /usr/pkg/lib/X11/app-default.
 
 Under Linux it worked fine for me, I'll recheck this tomorrow.
 
 
 Could you explain the following?
   If any users set XAPPLRESDIR in their own environment, these settings
   will not work -- such users need to set XUSERFILESEARCHPATH (syntax
   can be found in XtResolvePathname(3Xt)).
 
 What does "in their own environment" mean?
