Sorry to take so long on this.  I never was able to reproduce the problem, but I did see a message on one of the SBCL lists that mentioned something about a non-ascii UTF-8 character in the enviroment causing several of the contrib packages to not build.  In any case, I'm hoping that the update to 1.0.11 will fix things.
