I think events have overtaken us, and that the shell script
has been superceded by Adrian Portelli's rewrite.

I'll close the PR for now - if I've mistaken the problem,
we'll re-open this PR. If the problem exists in the new code
(and I haven't looked), we'll open a new PR.
