 During private conversation we have concluded that the reason why it
 fails on netbsd-4 but works on netbsd-5 is related to the configure
 stuff not using appropriate pthread linkage.
 The fix may be as simple as making sure -pthread is present in suitable
 pkg-config files. More investigation is needed.
