There's code in openssh that one might be able to steal. Although it's
probably grotty, and pkg_comp doesn't really need to be so elaborate.

That would probably do, yeah.

If we find any, maybe we ought to have pkgsrc infrastructure to
provide a dummy X server for such packages, so they build
consistently.
