Can you double check that the patch I gave you applied cleanly and
still did not work? As I mentioned in my last email, I was able to
duplicate the problem on NetBSD 4.0.1 by using pkgsrc gcc34 rather
than the built in gcc 4.1.2. I then applied my patch, and verified
that it worked in that environment. I'd like to apply my patch unless
you can help me figure out why it does not help your case. Thanks, -

I was not able to "apply" the patch (using patch(1)), but I was finally
able to insert the lines manually and check that this patch works.
If this patch or modifying the Makefile is the better method is beyond my
knowledge.
