 An up to date renderproto is going to need an up to date libXrender
 which is likely to need several other libraries updated, at which
 point it's probably easier and more maintainable to switch to modular
 X11.
 
 on balance that might not be a bad longterm plan, but for now native
 free *should* be working again now
