Updating current pkgsrc from kde 4.8.2 to kde 4.8.4 on two NetBSD 6.99.8 
(GENERIC) amd64 machines, one Intel-based, one AMD-based, both using Radeon 
4xxx graphics cards, and using startx to start kde4 causes a regression where 
after the kde splash icons are shown the display transitions to a black screen 
showing only the cursor.  The problem appears similar to

but the fixes recommended there such as installing dejavu-ttf did not work.

On the AMD64 machine with an Asus M5A87 motherboard, Dragonfly with as 
up-to-date as possible pkgsrc does successfully run kde 4.8.4.

Comparing startx messages started remotely using ssh both between DragonFly and 
NetBSD and successful NetBSD 4.8.2 and unsuccessful 4.8.4 reveal nothing 
remarkable.

Tail of /var/log/messages has only unusual error messages of the form:

It is possible to use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to return to the console which on the 
Intel-based machine shows:
