Oh, that's probably it. I think I've stepped on other manifestations
of this problem before, actually.
Yes, copying /usr/pkg/share/texmf-dist/web2c/texmf.cnf over
/usr/pkg/etc/texmf/texmf.cnf made it work.
Is there some reason that the copy in PKG_SYSCONFDIR doesn't update
itself? I've never changed it except to update it from the master copy
on one or two previous occasions when it's also caused everything to
stop working, and my understanding of CONF_FILES is that in that case
it should autoupdate.
