In this particular case, I wonder in what
scenario that distinction would be useful.

The only one I can come up with is:

1.  pkgsrc compiles the plugin on box A
where, for example, 2.2.10 is available
2.  pkgsrc links the plugin on box B
where, for example, 2.2.15 is available

Or did I miss something?
