 Without the DEPMETHOD it did. Is the DEPMETHOD correct? I haven't
 looked at it but given the error message it seems probable that it
 isn't...
 
 (I would have committed already if we hadn't been right in the tail
 end of a freeze; forcing a rebuild of most of tex for a non-default
 case seemed unnecessary.)
