 For what it is worth, now that the big file is on f.n.o, the difference
 between the two appears that the bigger one includes configure (170KB of it)
 and the smaller one doesn't (they both contain configure.ac).  That one
 file probably accounts for the entire size difference (I did not bother to
 diff the contents, just eyeballed tar t output...)
 
 Whether that configure is used, or gets overwritten by one of he auto* tools
 I have no idea.
 
 The mod dates on the files in the smaller version also appear to have all
 been updated to Mar 11 22:23 whereas on the larger file they are spread
 around various times between Mar 8 and Mar 11 (nothing later than Mar 11
 11:23).
 
 It might be worth someone seeing if the small distfile might not be a
 better choice (and now that the big one is available, that would mean
 using a DIST_SUBDIR).
