 I could build a sample Spring Boot project that uses gradle.
 ( https://spring.io/guides/gs/gradle/ ) 
 So it seems indeed that whatever the problem is, is triggered
 by use of the Groovy runtime. This seems to happen with openjdk8 also.
 
 Somewhat annoyingly it is not possible to build Groovy nor
 run it's unit test suite because that depends on Gradle.
