Hm, it may look like /etc/mk.conf having

PBULK_CACHE_DIRECTORY=/var/tmp/

and having a file...

ambrosia: {285} cat /var/tmp/build-options.freetype2 
PKG_BUILD_OPTIONS.freetype2= png
ambrosia: {286} 

does this.  Removing it gives me

ambrosia: {293} make show-var VARNAME=PKG_BUILD_OPTIONS.freetype2
 brotli png
ambrosia: {294} 

although this is not in a pbulk...  I've removed the
build-options files and the /etc/mk.conf entry so as to not
confuse myself later.
