Argh! I had hoped we would not deal with such outdated systems any more ;-)
I guess the best thing for now is to back out both of my latest changes
(the one that completely broke it right before the branch and the one the
unbroke it for more modern systems). Unfortunately I can't do that right
now myself - feel free to beat me to it.
