I don't know when this got changed, but pkgsrc has had read-only building
since some time in 1998. The previous behaviour was to attempt to create
the symbolic link, and don't worry if the link couldn't be created.
Sounds like the previous behaviour got borked somewhere along the line.

(and, yes, I prefer to have a symbolic link by default, but I suppose
I'm the only one, so I'll grin and bear it. But, believe me, it's so
much easier to find out and fix things if the symbolic link is there.
I don't remember seeing these multiple requests on tech-pkg)
