   No -- I just tried several times, and no output any of the times it
"hung". I'm beginning to wonder if it may have something to do with
another problem I have been having, though this one has persisted for as
long as I can remember..

   If I start firefox, and browse a few sites (particularly sites with
rather large images), then I can't start mplayer unless the movie is
very small (resolution-wise). If I have used firefox heavily, then I
sometimes I can't even start mplayer. If thunderbird is running, the
problem gets worse, but only slightly. If I shut down firefox and
thunderbird, I can run mplayer again without any problems. GIMP is also
another variable which appears to affect the problem, but like
thunderbird -- it appears to be minor.

   It has happened, though it's extremely rare, that even though I shut
down firefox, that mplayer won't behave. In these extreme cases, I need
to shut down X and restart it. When I do, all is fine again.
