Thank you! It seems to have worked; though I can't really prove it at the moment.  Firefox complains that it can't find the profile directory, which is likely due to failing hardware and so a corrupt NFS mount.  But at least it runs long enough to do that, and it doesn't segfault.  So it is probably working fine.
