A number of weird errors followed, skipping their description.

Finally it worked, with the learning: if you are re-bootstrapping,
deleting just pkg, work is not enough. Delete any packages already built
from your packages directory. This matters irrespective of whether you
have DEPENDS_TARGET set to bin-install or not.
