Even if you set that in your environment, the pkgsrc build will override 
is as necessary.

I didn't have a look at all the wip/gDesklets dependencies, but maybe the 
Makefile needs to add:

.include "../../devel/libgnomeui/buildlink3.mk"

And do a "make clean" before trying again.
