On my installation, I cheated the other way around, I linked it to /etc/fstab like you wrote :-) Just suggesting both is IMO ok.
I have removed the post-install creation of a symlink (since one is already provided by suse91_base), and added a section to MESSAGE that points out the alternative ways for providing mtab.
