I just *know* I am going to regret this, but since I have the requirement
I really ought to have a go at doing this myself. No I've not written a
device driver before, but there's a first time for everything.

Agreed. A 'speak now, or forever hold thy peace' moment.
If people could speak-up now, we can get a count together, or possibly a
pledgebank:
"I'll buy a Unipod if/when NetBSD supports it"
to waft under the nose of stdevel. If we give it a couple of days or a week
for people to speak-up I'll get in touch with stdevel to see if they'd be
amenable to providing the specs/etc necessary.
