"Very much" and not "exactly" because one of the goals here was to
have a clean, consistent, "integrated" interface.  As a result, I
didn't think necessary or appropriate to pick up the 'other baggage'
that went with the Sun firm_event interface (which in turn was cloned
from the SunOS interfaces).
