I have a program floating around called iozone  It's a benchmarking utility for
drive speed.  It writes a massive file, and then reads it back out.. telling
you the speed of the disk..  It lets you set the size of the transfer and
whatnot.

If you need, I can mail it to you.. It's not too big. (one .c file)
No idea where I hunted it down.. Probably wuarchive.
