It turns out my problems were caused by the L2 cache
being flaky at 15ns timing, so I adjusted it up to 20ns
and it seems to work fine now.

Thanks to everyone who told me it works on *their*
computers--it inspired me to dig further into the
hardware docs and find the necessary jumper..
