This seems to work better (it at least passes the fsck test). Is this
just updated firmware, or are there less obvious changes?

This kernel is compiled with pciide, which I hadn't been able to get
to work, but removing the IDE CD-ROM seems to have solved that problem
too (sorry for my confusing setup, booting from one disk, having the
filesystem on another, performing tests on a third, and trying not to
screw up the contents of a fourth :-).
