Maybe not, some manufacturers which use the 21140A have simply connected
the full duplex led to one of the general purpouse I/O pins of the chip,
so the led only means something if the driver is aware of how to do this
and if the SROM on the card makes any sense.
I agree you have a full duplex problem, though. I believe looking at the
number of collisions after high speed transfers is the best way to
determine if your card is in full duplex or not (0 collisions being full
duplex).
BTW, I run full duplex between one alpha and one AMD K6 machine at home
using a simple cross over cable with no problems, both cards being 21140A
based. Card manufacturer and revisions does matter, though.
