That probably means that you have a kernel with the ex driver enabled,
but not the MII code, which is needed by the ex driver (and some
other ones). Add the line

exphy*	at	mii? phy?

to your config file and all should be well.

I see that this line is missing in the GENERIC file, I'll add it.
