Chris,
I am including this on list, just to share.
I have been just playing with my multia, waiting to get my external
drive(s) up and running.  So, I don't have any direct experience yet,
but I will be using my serial ports for external modem, and a few other
goodies.

I have played with and run netbsd on vax.
I had a bit of experience with serial ports on the uVax II.  The key
there was with the modem controls.  I had to rig a real null modem cable
with DSR/modem ready, cts/clear to send, and CD/carrier detect to make
it work.
I expect to really get into this beasty shortly, I am under the
assumption that the alpha serial code is about generic, usual unix style
tty0x, etc.
