Yes, it is reproducible. All I have to do is log in, less /var/log/messages,
go to the end of the file, and start backing up. Within a few screens the
machine will lock up.
I patched the kernel as you suggested and tried it again. No luck,
unfortunately -- the behavior persists.
For reference, the the video card in question is a Matrox Millenium (MGA).
It isn't a TGA card, although it should just be operating as a VGA device, I
imagine. It is detected as vga0 by the kernel.

save mail message to tgapatch.gz.uue
uudecode tgapatch.gz.uue
gzip -d tgapatch.gz
patch /sys/dev/pci/tga.c tgapatch
