   C is the whole disk. You have to edit the disklabel to create a 'd' partition.

i've often just newfs'ed and mounted the 'c' partition and not ever
bothered with even putting a disk label on the disk.. my kernel boots
and i get 4 "no disk label" messages currently, actually...
