I am trying to compile some later versions of gcc for netbsd/alpha-1.5.

i applied the patches for version 2.95.2 which I found on the netbsd server.
(besides having a problem with the declaration of vfprintf) linking of some
gcc binaries fails with a "cannot open crt1.o: no such file or directory".

any suggestions?


Compiling XFree 3.3.6 with the -O2 option of the bundled gcc compiler
results obviously in some buggy code. That's the main motivation of getting a later
gcc version running. Maybe compiling XFree 3.3.6 with a later version of gcc
-O2 works.

Actually, what about XFree 4.0.x. Is it possible to compile that version of
XFree with -O2?


I tried out netscape. I am impressed, it really works. It works even faster
than expected. While beeing on dec's homepage to get the osf shared libs I
have been highly impressed by dec's commitment to linux. they even provide some
(possible high performant) fortran and c compilers, etc. unfortunately, they
die with a "bad system call" ;-(
