Nope. The first VAX was the 11/780, it was purely TTL, and it really did
use the 74S181 as its ALU slice.
(For no good reason other than having fun, I wrote a bunch of vax microcode
once. I had to spend a certain amount of time looking at the schematics.
In the true vax "printf is an opcode" fashion, I wrote a frame-buffer-scroll
(bitblt) instruction, as well as some alternate procedure entry and exit
ops.)
